Ledeburg Garden

Ledeburg Garden

Rows of steeply banked Baroque gardens rise behind the Palaces of Valdstejnská ulice. It’s a climb if you enter from the street side, but the many shady arbors and niches are worth the exertion. On the southern slopes leading down from Prague Castle, the Prague Castle garden is comprised of 5 separate, but interconnected, palace gardens – the Ledeburg garden, Lesser Pálffy Garden, the Greater Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Lesser Fürstenberg Garden.

The garden, with its frescoes and statuary, was restored with support from a fund headed by Czech president Václav Havel and Britain’s Prince Charles. You can also enter directly from the upper, south gardens of Prague Castle in the summer. This marvelous garden, with an unforgettable view from the upper levels, offers great possibilities for summer events for up to 1,000 people.

The Prague Castle garden were established on the site of vineyards, or Renaissance gardens, attached to aristocratic palaces. The steep terrain has been refashioned into several terrace levels. The nature of the gardens ranged from pure utility with vineyards and fruit trees, right through to decorative with rich and varied landscaping.

The gardens are now linked together and their composition makes up a unique garden complex. All of the Palace Gardens have varied architectural decoration, decorative staircases, balustrades, lookout terraces and small pavilions integrally composed with vegetation into picturesque ensembles.
